Lob wedges have grown in reputation to be one of the best clubs to use around the green. Not only are they lofted to lift the golf ball with ease, but they create a ton of spin that helps stop the ball on the green.

From digging out of the deep rough to lifting the ball from dense sand, a lob wedge, when used correctly, can give the golfer tremendous advantages on the course.

And the fact that it lowers the handicap means you should then want to know the best wedges for beginners and high handicappers because most high-handicap newbies in golf tend to hit the ball thin. And if not that, then you’re most likely hitting some inches behind the golf ball, therefore producing chunk shots more often.

So instead of finding the best wedges overall, we’ll have a look at what type of wedge is perfect for you as a beginner.

Let’s get started.

Cleveland Golf CBX 2 Wedge

Cleveland Golf CBX 2 Wedge
  • Cleveland CBX2 wedges are designed to better fit the short game of golfers who play cavity back, game improvement irons.
  • A hollow cavity design near the heel with heavier weight in the toe to maximize perimeter weighting for forgiveness and stability.
  • Dynamic sole grinds are specialized by loft to provide the versatility you need to execute any short game shot. V-shaped sole on 46A-52A lofts. S-shaped sole on 54A and 56A lofts. C-shaped sole on 58A and 60A lofts.
  • V-shaped sole on 46A-52A lofts.
  • S-shaped sole on 54A and 56A lofts.

Once again, Cleveland appears on this list. There’s no escaping the quality of their wedges. I like the 56° Cleveland CBX  wedge.

This wedge is easy to hit because Cleveland has put 12 degrees bounce on this club with a nice thick sole to glide through the turf, getting the ball into the air easily.

The cavity-back design in the CBX 2 is more forgiving than the blade wedges most often found nowadays.

Forgiveness is the magic word for high handicappers and beginners, and in a wedge, it’s even more important so you can get onto the green effortlessly to putt for some pars.

With the cavity back and chunky sole on the CBX, it’s going to be much easier to get out of the bunkers, prevent chunked chips around the green, and improve approach shots onto the greens.

Like irons, the cavity back allows for more perimeter weighting, which is unique for a premium wedge.

The perimeter weighting means you’ll still get distance and spin on off-center strikes because of the extra weight behind the ball, even on mishits.

This premium wedge functions as a game improvement club by bringing all the elements of forgiveness to the clubhead.

It’s always a safe bet with Cleveland wedges, but this is easy of the best wedges for high handicappers and beginners looking to upgrade.

  • The Cleveland CBX wedge comes packed with innovative, helpful tech such as the Dual-V sole and Rotex grooves.
  • If you catch this club out of the middle on the fairway, in the bunker, or the rough, the ball will go where you want it to.
  • It looks good in the bag, and as we’ve said, Cleveland just knows how to make wedges. They build quality clubs that don’t disappoint.

  • The forgiving head is easier to hit than a bladed wedge
  • The confidence-inspiring shape at address
  • Very good value for money
  • Surprisingly good spin rates
  • It Will suit almost all golfers

  • It may look a little chunky to elite players
  • Not as much feel as a bladed wedge
  • Only three grind options

  • LEGAL FOR TOURNAMENT PLAY AND 1 YEAR MANUFACTURER WARRANTY:. The Square strike wedge chipping wedge has a high-quality construction backed by unbeatable warranty.

Many people dismiss these kinds of wedges, but we have personally seen people change their games with these. They are usually terrified of hitting the ground before the ball and typically do because of that fear.

The way to use these wedges is to learn the bump and run technique which helps to get you started learning. After playing these, you grow in confidence and get into “normal” wedges again.

We are not impressed with people who dismiss these clubs out of hand without even trying them.

The struggle for many golfers is chipping, and these are legal for tournament play and help the average person with a problem learn the basics of a bump and run shot, which is the essential chipping shot for golf.

Forget the high-lobbed shots and try them around the greens for the lower shot, which is far more reliable and more predictable than the normal high lofted wedges that you feel you need to help into the air.

That’s not to say this is a miracle club, but it’s a step in the direction you need to go and build confidence as a high handicapper or beginner. Please ignore all the people who know nothing about your game trying to shame you into playing professional-level shots when all you want is to get it on the green!

  • 45-degree loft
  • Shaped like a putter
  • Centered center of gravity
  • 5 inches long
  • Anti-chunk sole
  • No-dig leading edge
  • 1-year manufacturers warranty against defects
  • Legal for tournament play
  • Well made construction
  • Provides easy chipping
  • Promotes smooth contact on and around the green
  • Versatile club

  • The loft may be too deep if you prefer a shallow ball flight
  • It may be heavy for beginners

C3i Wedge

Another alternative to the Smart Sole wedge is the C3i wedge. This is not a brand that you hear about too often, and this is some new technology, but this is one of the best wedges for high handicappers.

The C3i does not come in traditional lofts; instead, it comes in a 55, 59, and 65-degree option. It has an extra-wide sole and is meant to cut through sand and tight lies easily. This wedge is entirely tournament legal, although it may not look quite like that when you first see it.

The C3i is built for a particular shot. It is not intended to be used as a club to hit a full swing shot instead of flop and lop wedge shots; this C3i provides a great option. We would not recommend a high handicapper puts three of these in their golf bag.

Having one as a go-to club when this type of sand or lob shot is needed is a perfect option, but having some versatility in your clubs to hit various shots is likely a lot more critical.

This wedge is not customizable and comes with a standard steel shaft. It is priced about the same as the CBX wedge from 2018 that we reviewed. Again, this is a great option to get the ball out of the bunker or hit from a tight lie.

If you want to master your short game and continue to improve, you will need some more tools in your bag in addition to this golf club.

  • This wedge is one of the best to bring up the balls out of the bunkers.
  • The clubhead is designed with an extra-wide sole that is very effective while gliding through the sand, which doesn’t break the formation of the surface.
  • It will give you the perfect combination of loft and distance, rare in other wedges available in the market.
  • As the head and shaft are made of stainless steel, you will get better durability.
  • Optimized center of gravity
  • Eliminates fat shots
  • Forgiving Club
  • It makes loft shots easier
  • Affordable

  • Not suitable for a links course
  • Heavy club
  • Will not benefit low handicap golfers

Callaway Golf Men’s Chrome Mack Daddy 4

Callaway Golf Men's Chrome Mack Daddy 4
  • Due to unprecedented demand across the industry, causing a shortage of shafts and grip, we may need to substitute for an equivalent premium shaft/grip.
  • Four Sole Grinds to Suit a Variety of Playing Styles, Attack Angles and Course Conditions
  • Broad Range of Lofts and Bounce Combinations
  • Satisfying Feel from Soft Carbon Steel, Precise CG Locations and Crisp Turf Interaction
  • Choice of Platinum Chrome or Black Matte Finish

Callaway brought in legendary wedge designer Roger Cleveland to work on the Mack Daddy 4 range, and together they’ve designed a set of highly reactive, premium wedges.

The S-grind is the most versatile of the collection, making it the obvious choice for high handicappers.

We particularly like the slightly squarer toe offset to create a straighter leading edge in terms of design.

You’ll find the Mack Daddy will give you more spin than most wedges.

That’s down to its 16-grove configuration and an extra, more considerable groove drilled in the very bottom of the clubface.

For those looking for a bit of extra stopping power on their shots, the Mack Daddy S-Grind is an excellent choice from among our list of best wedges.

  • New Groove-In-Groove Technology increases the surface area on the face and therefore contact with the ball’s cover at impact, generating more spin on both full and short shots for increased precision and control.
  • Four different grind options allow for customization of wedge makeup depending on playing conditions and ability level.
  • Variable degrees of loft and bounce allow for tremendous versatility in shot selection off of tight lies and out of thick rough.
  • Wider sole is ideal in the softer sander.
  • Semi-straight leading edge creates confident feel over ball.
  • S-Grind technology makes it great for various lies and swing types.

  • Price. Relatively expensive for beginners.
  • S-Grind only available in black finish.

Callaway Mack Daddy CB Wedge

Callaway Mack Daddy CB Wedge
  • Due to unprecedented demand across the industry, causing a shortage of shafts and grip, we may need to substitute for an equivalent premium shaft/grip.
  • More Spin from Groove-In-Groove Technology
  • Four Sole Grinds to Suit a Variety of Playing Styles, Attack Angles and Course Conditions
  • Broad Range of Lofts and Bounce Combinations
  • Satisfying Feel from Soft Carbon Steel, Precise CG Locations and Crisp Turf Interaction

Callaway may not have made it to our top list of putters for high handicappers, but it certainly makes an appearance here. It indeed ranks among wedges best suited for high-handicap and beginner golfers because of the highly forgiving cavity-back design.

Then there’s also the exclusive Groove-In-Groove technology for a more excellent spin. And the four different sole grinds that support various playing styles, course conditions, and attack angles. But let’s not get ahead so quickly.

Firstly, wedges that feature a cavity-back construction are also designed with components that enhance forgiveness and performance. In this case, it’s the more forgiving, wider sole grinds. So you sidestep the chances of digging into the turf, be it sand, rough, or fairway.

Then let’s talk about the special JAWS groove technology. These grooves have a more V-shape with a tighter edge radius. This makes the whole process of the clubface grabbing the golf ball cover much easier. And that promotes more spin for more control on your approach shots and around the greens, of course.

We can talk about the feel too, which certainly deserves attention with Callaway Mack Daddy CB Wedge. Since its clubface is so highly forgiving, you don’t have to worry about the feel either. The cavity-back design and also the perimeter weighting work together to produce a rewarding clubface contact.

If anything, just don’t expect too much to get a buttery, deep feel as with the Callaway MD5 Wedge. In the same context, Mack Daddy CB is also slightly burlier and beefier. Even so, the wedge doesn’t look like the odd one out in a golf bag with players’ style irons.

  • Soft carbon steel wedge made for accuracy
  • Precise CG location and crisp turf interaction
  • Four sole grinds for different attack angles
  • Groove-In-Groove technology produces more spin
  • Fantastic forgiveness levels
  • Bears the Mack Daddy name rightly so
  • A longer grip is a great idea
  • Easy to use from bunkers
  • Great for improving turf interaction
  • Excellent on shorter shots

  • Not as well suited to face manipulation
  • Fewer grind and bounce options compared to usual specialist wedges
  • Could have been slightly better on full shots

Pinemeadow Wedge

Pinemeadow Wedge
  • Largest face area of any wedge available making the toughest of lies seem like perfect lies
  • Built standard with high quality Pinemeadow steel from Apollo(R), a 125 gram shaft with a low to mid kick point for the same $19.95 value, perfect for the beginning to average golfer
  • Available in 52, 56, 60, 64, and the impossible to find 68 degree wedge
  • Compare features and performance with the best classic wedge designs at $120

It’s common to see beginners carrying just a pitching wedge for chipping around the green. So how about correcting this one of the most common blunders by including the Pinemeadow wedge!

No doubt, this golf club adds versatility and value to your set. Chipping up close starts to feel way more comfortable. And you even get the optimal loft whenever the situation arises.

To be honest, the lightweight-shafted Pinemeadow wedge here is a highly recommended choice for high handicappers. So if you’re a scratch golfer, then it’s best to choose another one with higher-performance grooves.

The shaft design consists of steel with a low to moderate level of kick-point. That’s how I know it’s perfect for beginners.

But then the shaft isn’t too lightweight; otherwise, graphite would be used. The inclusion of steel strikes the ideal balance between too light and heavy. Because a little bit of weight, when it comes to wedges, does indeed allow you to strike down and through your golf ball more easily.

The clubface is certainly larger to correct those mis-hits you may be guilty of producing.

Now let’s talk about the elephant in the room, which is a comparatively much lower price. So just because the wedge is so low-priced doesn’t mean other significant factors like the club’s feel get compromised. But then, obviously, expecting a Tour-level feel with this inexpensive Pinemeadow wedge is just irrational.

As long as you don’t indulge in any sort of comparisons here, your beginner set of skills and high golf handicap are sure to appreciate the largest clubface area of the Pinemeadow wedge.

  • Wedge with steel shaft, the same as irons, for more consistency
  • Expanded clubface area perfect for the strictest lies
  • Dark tumble finish looks visually appealing
  • It provides a lot of lofts
  • It delivers pinpoint accuracy
  • It’s offered at a reasonable price
  • It is made of high-quality steel, which makes it a durable feel

  • Black finish prone to wearing off quickly
  • Too light to judge how far the shot travels

  • MID For neutral and steep attack angles, the MID features a V-Shaped sole enhance for smooth full shot performance and crisp pitch shots around the green

The Cleveland RTX 4 Wedge tackles the issue many golfers face when purchasing wedges. Often, the difference between a sand wedge and the pitching wedge that comes with your iron set makes it tough to play various shots.

Now, with the Progressive Shaping feature, golfers can replace the lower lofted pitching wedges in their set with something more versatile from the fairway as well as other lies.

The four various sole shapes of the Cleveland RTX 4 Wedge enhance the versatility of this great golf club.

The traditional Full shape is stable through impact and works well in the sand when the clubface is opened, while the Mid shape features a V-shaped grind that assists golfers who have steep or neutral angles of attack.

The Low and XLOW sole shapes remove bounce from the heel, toe, and trail edge, allowing the leading edge to sit lower and slip under the golf ball. No matter what shot you need to hit, the Cleveland RTX 4 Wedge has a sole shape for you.

Progressive Feel Balancing Technology is exclusive to the Cleveland RTX 4 Wedge and not only enhances feel by moving the center of gravity closer to the sweet spot it also stabilizes the clubhead through impact. This results in a wedge that both feels better and is much more forgiving on off-center hits.

Creating maximum spin is often the most critical element of any wedge. The Cleveland RTX 4 Wedge has gradually developed a remarkably durable wedge that produces maximum friction and spin rates on short and full shots.

Due to the sharp, deep grooves and precision milling on the face, your shots will spin more with less effort with the Cleveland RTX 4 Wedge.

Buyers Guide

1. Forgiveness

We don’t want to beat a dead horse here, but high handicappers and beginners should be playing clubs that offer maximum forgiveness. The amount of skill needed to make solid contact, even on short shots, takes time to develop.

As you improve and reduce your handicap, you can start looking at the pure blade-designed wedges. Still, for beginners, we’re going to suggest ones that have more forgiveness built into them with some cavity or perimeter weighting.

2. Versatility

For beginners, versatility will be more of a factor of having a variety of loft wedges in your bag. As we mentioned above, to have plenty of options available to you without having to make different types of swings, it’s best to have at least four wedges in your bag (pitching, gap, sand, and lob).

Each of these wedges should have different types of bounces that can be used for multiple types of course conditions.

For instance, most sand wedges are designed with more bounce to be explicitly used out of sand traps. This same bounce can be used to help you hit off of soft squishy turf as well.

3. Cavity Back vs. Blades

Cavity-back wedges are more commonly used because they pave the way for digging the golf ball more easily. On top of that, cavity-backs boost forgiveness, thus improving performance. After all, the clubhead is slightly larger.

These types of wedges are perfect to be included in a golf club set consisting of game-improvement irons, which are specifically made for golfers who are new and/or have a high handicap. But you can’t expect distance control from cavity-back wedges.

For that, nothing works better than blade wedges. Along with exceptional distance control, you also gain optimal feedback, feel, and workability. The simple, compact design, which is not as forgiving as cavity-back, is more fitting for golfers with a low handicap.

4. Grind

How the golf club sole is ground or manipulated for changing the way the club touches and rests on the turf determines the grind. And it has a direct impact on club bounce. So when you have different grinds, you can take more versatile shots without interfering with the bounce factor of the wedge.

But beginners don’t need to stress about this particular aspect. Because for most of them, the ultimate goal is to make sure the golf ball reaches the green in the least amount of strokes.

5. Shaft

Most brands give you a standard steel wedge. But, as a high handicapper or beginner, if your swing speed is slow, then you should opt for graphite shafts all across your golf clubs. These, no doubt, allow you to increase the clubhead speed.

But then that works only in the case of full swing shots with your wedge. On the other hand, for shorter pitch and chip shots, it doesn’t matter what shaft you use.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why Forgiving Wedges are Best for a High Handicapper?

More often than not, forgiving wedges have a cavity-back design with a leading edge that’s slightly thicker. This means they’re not your conventional blade-style wedges.

As to why this particular design is the most beneficial for high handicappers and beginners alike? Simply because most of them strike off-center shots. So, at such times, that extra element of forgiveness knows how to correct mis-hits.

2. Do High Handicappers Need a Lob Wedge?

Not many know this, but lob shots come to the rescue when you struggle to play from bare or tight lies, which high handicappers often work with. They’re also most likely to take large divots. So, in such sticky situations, a high-lofted wedge like the lob (but not more than 60 degrees) can save you.

3. What is a lob wedge?

A lob wedge is a club that has a loft beyond a sand wedge that measures anywhere from 60-64 degrees. Whereas amateur golfers usually hit their lob wedge around 60-80 yards, professional golfers can hit a lob wedge between 90-110 yards in the distance.

The lob wedge is usually played with an open stance that allows the golfer to open the clubface and slide the clubhead underneath the ball. This tactic is useful when the golfer is trying to get the golf ball out of trouble, such as tall, deep grass or sand, or clear an impediment such as a hill or water hazard.

The lob wedge used in conjunction with the open stance allows the golfer to get the ball high into the air and land softly around the target.

4. What is the difference between a lob wedge and a sand wedge?

A lob wedge is the highest lofted wedge that a golfer can place in their bag. Lob wedges are clubs that have between 60-64 degrees of loft on the clubface.

In comparison, the sand wedge has 56 degrees, a gap wedge runs between 50-52 degrees, and a pitching wedge is anywhere from 44-48 degrees in loft.

A lob wedge is different from a sand wedge because the loft makes it ideal for getting the golf ball out of deep rough, and thick sand.

The lob wedge is correctly suited for this task because, in an open stance, the club takes on even more loft, allowing it to slide underneath the golf ball easily.

In an open stance, a sand wedge will go further than a shot with the lob wedge due to its reduced loft setting, so golfers, especially beginning golfers, must be careful with what wedge they use around the green.

5. Are sharp grooves with lob wedges important?

Grooves are essential on all wedges because they create spin by increasing friction against the softer cover of the ball to boost the rotations and launch angle of the shot off the clubface.

If you follow professional golf closely, you’ll hear golfers, such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, talk about how they want fresh grooves to maximize spin and control at the beginning of every tournament.

Having wedges in their bag that aren’t well worn is an advantage that most pro golfers take advantage of every week.

Since an amateur golfer can’t utilize a relationship with a club sponsor to get new wedges every week, they must maintain the club’s face throughout its life to receive the maximum performance of the wedge.

This maintenance includes cleaning the wedge grooves throughout a round and sharpening them either through a tool or via a professional.

6. What wedges should a beginner carry?

A 48-degree pitching wedge, a 54-degree sand wedge, and a 60-degree lob wedge would be ideal for most beginner golfers. This range of clubs provides plenty of versatility while allowing a beginner golfer to carry his or her share of fairway woods and hybrids.
